Drywall systems
General-purpose interior walls and ceilings in dry areas.
Used in areas with moderate moisture, such as bathrooms and laundry rooms. It is not waterproof.
Has treated paper or a paperless/fibreglass facing to resist mould growth. Useful in damp areas.
Commonly used in wet areas behind tile because it handles water exposure much better than gypsum board.
Lightweight and easier to cut, but product-specific limitations apply in wet areas.
Thicker, fire-resistant gypsum board used where fire-rated wall or ceiling assemblies are required. Commonly 5/8 in.
Enhanced fire-resistant gypsum board, often used in higher-performance fire-rated assemblies.
Designed to improve sound isolation between rooms.
Reinforced to withstand dents and impacts. Useful in schools, hallways, garages, and commercial spaces.
Durable wall and ceiling panels made from polyester or epoxy resin reinforced with fibreglass. Commonly used where surfaces need to be easy to clean, moisture-resistant, and impact-resistant.
Strong, durable structural sheathing with good resistance to moisture and repeated exposure compared with some OSB products.
Gypsum-based panels designed specifically for exterior walls. Often used in commercial construction and fire-rated assemblies.
Has a moisture-resistant fibreglass facing instead of traditional paper, making it better suited to exterior exposure during construction.
Primarily provides continuous insulation, although some products can contribute to structural performance.

Insulation
Insulation within exterior wall assemblies.
Typically for sound control or separating conditioned and unconditioned areas.
Attic blown-in, roof deck, or below-roof-deck insulation.
Interior or exterior foundation walls.
Insulation systems used around penetrations and rated assemblies.
Batt or other materials specifically intended for sound attenuation.
Open-cell or closed-cell foam applied to walls, roofs, rim joists, and similar assemblies.
Membranes, vapour barriers, air barriers, and associated sealing, depending on the project specifications.

Steel stud framing
Used for interior partition walls. Typically lighter-gauge steel.
Designed to carry structural loads from floors, roofs, or upper storeys. Uses heavier-gauge, higher-strength studs than typical partition framing. Requires engineering for stud size, spacing, connections, bracing, and loads. Common in multi-storey residential and commercial construction.
Used for exterior walls and building envelopes. Usually heavier than interior partition studs.
Steel sheet is cold-formed into shapes such as C-studs and tracks. This is the most common modern steel-stud framing system. It can be used for both non-load-bearing and structural applications, and studs can be manufactured with punched service holes for electrical and plumbing.
Uses relatively thin metal channels rather than conventional C-studs. Often attached to masonry, concrete, or existing walls.
Specialized steel framing used around elevator shafts, stairwells, mechanical shafts, and other vertical cavities. Often uses C-H, I-shaped, or specialized shaft-wall studs, designed to work with fire-rated gypsum systems.
Uses thin metal channels designed to reduce sound transmission. The channel is installed between the framing and gypsum board. Common in bedrooms, hotels, apartments, and other acoustically sensitive areas.

Taping & finishing
Joint tape and compound are applied over drywall seams, fasteners, and corners, then sanded to create a smooth surface ready for decoration.
A skim coat is applied across the entire drywall surface to create a uniform finish for critical lighting conditions, dark colours, or high-sheen coatings.
Texture can be applied to create a specified finish or carefully removed before the surface is repaired and prepared for a new finish.

Wall scopes generally focus on vertical sound absorption and sound isolation, while ceiling scopes focus more on reverberation control, sound absorption, and ceiling-system performance.
